The history of the establishment of the conveyancing profession, and the fight to establish a licensing scheme for Conveyancers in Victoria, is a story worth telling.
This book covers the early beginnings of the profession in the 1860s, its demise in the early 1900s and its revival in the 1980s.
It explains how a small group of strong-minded, resilient Conveyancers were determined to open up the conveyancing market, competing with lawyers and providing the public with a choice of practitioner.
The path was long and challenging, as the group had to overcome continuous resistance by successive Victorian governments, strong opposition from a well-resourced Law Institute of Victoria and an expensive and stressful court case before they succeeded.
Their ultimate success should not be underestimated and is a reminder to current and future Conveyancers not to take their profession for granted.

Jillean Ludwell began working in a legal office in 1970 and developed an interest in the conveyancing area. After completing an Associate Diploma of Business (Legal Practice) at RMIT, in 1989 she opened a conveyancing business, which she operated for over 25 years.
She was a founding member of the Australian Institute of Conveyancers (Victorian Division) (AICVic) and served as President of both State and National bodies. In 2003 she became the Chief Executive Officer of AICVic, a position she held until the end of 2021 when she retired.
Jillean was instrumental in the introduction of the Conveyancers Act 2006 which established a licensing system for conveyancers in Victoria.
As a Committee member of AICVic, from the late 1990s Jillean was involved with the Victorian Land Registry in the development of the electronic conveyancing project, which eventually expanded nationally, resulting in the establishment of what is now the PEXA platform.
On Australia Day 2018, Jillean was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her services to the conveyancing profession.
